Real Madrid
You can't come to Madrid without seeing the most famous football team in the world, Real Madrid! Nine times European Cup winners and Champions of the League last season. Bernd Schuster has his work cut out with World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannevaro, German defender Christoph Metzelder and Ruud van Nistelrooy in an attempt to recover the success of previous years.
A trip to the 84,000 seat Bernabeu, situated in the heart of upmarket northern Madrid, is a must for all football fans, but if you're expecting an English-style atmosphere forget it. The Spanish word for football fan is "aficionado"; and the applause at Madrid's home is reserved for the extravagant flicks and tricks expected from its world famous stars.
Matches are usually scheduled for Sunday evenings but this can change to the Saturday evening due to either television rights or forthcoming European fixtures. Whilst the draw indicates the weekend a game will be played, it is not until the Monday before the game that the day (Saturday or Sunday) and the time are decided, so keep this in mind when booking flights for your weekend if you plan on going to a game.
