El Escorial was founded by Phillip the Second in the sixteenth century at the height of the " epoca de oro" when Spain was at the height of its power with an empire " that the sun never set" This vast monastery was was in fact built to commemorate the Spanish victory over the French at the Battle of St Quentin in 1557 and is an extraordinary and powerful reminder of that age. At the time it was the largest building in the world. Complete with visit to the " Hall of the Royal Blood" where the remains of the Spanish rulers are interred, Cathedral, as well as a tour through the Royal household, the enormous 40,000 volume library and the breathtaking views over the Madrid Sierra which inspired Phillip II. Visit to the Valley of the Fallen Monument of the Spanish Civil War. The Valley of the Fallen (Valle de los Caidos) is located in the Sierra de Guadarrama close to the Monastery of El Escorial. This complex was built between 1940 and 1958 and is a monument intended to commemorate all those who died on both sides during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).The Valley of the Fallen is associated with Franco's regime not least because the late General was buried inside the basilica and he was the one who ordered its construction but also because of the countless number of Republican prisoners who endured terrible conditions as slave labour building it.Nevertheless, some 40,000 Nationalist and Republican fallen are buried here and with its 1930´s futuristic arquitecture it remains an impressive site to visit.
