The Royal Palace of Aranjuez was initially commissioned by Philip the Second but not finished until the reign of Ferdinand VI some 200 years later and even then two new wings were added on by his successor Charles III. It was built to equal the Palace of Versailles and whilst it did not match it in size - it did in style, and has attracted visitors from around the world ever since. Internationally, Aranjuez has become known through the “Concierto de Aranjuez” by Joaquin Rodrigo.Upon his death he was buried in the town's cemetery. The palace also boasts some incredible arquitecture and beautiful and huge gardens whose impressive water fountains were designed to protect the Palace from the harsh Madrid Meseta winds that blow in the summer. The half day tour is complete with English speaking guide. In 2001 it was designated a World Heritage site.
